Hillary - Our latest surgical success!

Hillary arrived at Lucky Dog 2 weeks ago with a noticeable limp. X-rays showed that she had a rotated femur bone from an old fracture. The rotation prevented her knee from properly functioning and caused her extreme pain. Yesterday, Hillary had surgery to clean out the arthritis, fix the rotated femur, and re-groove the knee so it functions properly. Hillary came through surgery with flying colors!!! Now, its on to physical therapy with her foster mom!

Of course, nothing in life is free, and even with our rescue discount, Hillary's surgery was very expensive! Please help us pay her bills! DONATE TODAY!

Tom's surgery was a success!!

Tom had a very successful surgery today to drain the blood out of the hematomas that had developed on his ears. He has to go back for bandage changes every few days to prevent infection, but so far so good. How cute is he in his little bandage??

Tom Needs Ear Surgery ASAP!!!

Poor Tom! He woke up this morning with strange swelling in his ears. After rushing him to the vet, we learned that he has hematomas in both ears! Even worse, he needs surgery to fix them!

We've done some on-line research about aural hematomas, and learned that an aural hematoma is a swelling involving the earflap (referred to as the pinna) and is caused by a rupture of a blood vessel under the skin. As the ruptured blood vessel bleeds it creates a pocket of serum and blood in the space between the skin and the cartilage of the pinna. Usually it is caused by excessive head shaking, scratching, or trauma to the ear, but in Tom's case, we dont know why they appeared!

Tom is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Please help us raise funds to cover his surgery!

Aaliyah -- the dog with three broken feet!

Sweet Aaliyah was going out for a run with her foster mom when she got startled, pulling the leash out of her foster's hands. Aaliyah made a mad dash for the safety of her home, and seemed, at first glance to be no worse for the wear other than a few scratches on her paws. By nightfall, however, it was evident that something was very wrong. Aaliyah was not eating, drinking, or getting up out of her bed. A trip to the vet the next day showed that Aaliyah had broken bones in three of her four paws!!

The very next day, we rushed Aaliyah to Dr. Snakard, our wonderful orthopedic surgeon at the Veterinary Surgical Center, who told us that Aaliyah would need surgery on her right front foot to realign the broken bones. The left front foot was not as badly injured so would heal in a splint. Her right night would also heal on its own, but needed to be placed in a cast.

This morning we got the good news that Aaliyah's surgery was successful! She is now starting her 5-7 weeks of crate rest (poor girl!).

Please consider helping us cover the cost of Aaliyah's surgery! DONATE TODAY!

Nyla was hit by a car and then dumped at a vet hospital . . . Now she is a Lucky Dog!

Nyla is a beautiful 1 yr old yorkie mix who thought she had a great life -- until her owner took her for her first car ride and didnt tie her in! During the ride, she got scared and jumped out the window!! While trying to catch her, the owner ran over Nyla with the car, getting into an accident with another car at the same time.

Nyla was taken to the emergency room with with multiple hip fractures. The vet recommended surgery to repair the hips or conservative therapy (crate rest) while the fractures healed on their own. The owner declined all of the options and was going to euthanize her.

So the vet hospital didn't want to put her down so they asked Lucky Dog for help. She had surgery on Friday, 7/8. She will likely walk funny, but she will function just fine as a little dog. She had a urinary catheter in place for 5 days in hopes to repair any urinary lacerations that may have occurred from the trauma. The urinary catheter was just pulled, and she seems to be doing well. She is eating now and seems to be happy, knowing that Lucky Dog gave her a second chance.

Lucky Dog needs to raise money to cover Nyla's surgery. Please consider a donation today!! And, click here for more information on Nyla (including how to adopt her!)
